This report from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Statistics presents information on corrections expenditures by local governments from FY2005 to FY2011. Local corrections expenditures fund jails, juvenile institutions, and community supervision. In 2011, local spending for corrections was 1.6 percent of total expenditures, with over 80 percent of total corrections expenditures spent on correctional institutions. The report also includes information on local government spending for police protection, judicial and legal services, education, health care, and other areas.
