Where Pretrial Improvements Are Happening

Pretrial Justice InstituteEfforts to improve pretrial justice are underway across the country, both in small towns that seek to lower jail populations and as part of bills before Congress that would restrict federal funding for states that continue to rely on money bail. This report from the Pretrial Justice Institute is intended to help readers understand the variety of pretrial improvements underway and where they are happening.

The report offers brief descriptions of a range of work organized into several main categories: changing practice; judiciary-led change; pretrial litigation; pretrial legislation; executive branch-led change; and community- and grassroots-led change. A state-by-state table is provided at the end of the document for quick reference, and the publication, updated quarterly, retains overall information over the course of a calendar year to ensure that it is a complete, standalone resource.
