Butler County Boosting Efforts to Keep Mentally Ill out of Jail, in Treatment Instead

Butler County has earned high praise from a former Ohio Supreme Court justice and could secure more funding to continue the battle against mental health and incarceration issues, officials said. Butler County joined the statewide “Stepping Up Initiative” three years ago in an effort to keep people with mental health and addiction issues out of the jail and in treatment. Several county agencies have joined the efforts, and former Ohio Supreme Court Justice Evelyn Stratton said she considers the county “one of the top five leaders” in the state in the effort.
