Incorporating Dual Diagnosis Treatment

The co-occurrence of mental health and substance use disorders is very common among people in the criminal justice system, impacting their recovery paths, creating stress for their families, and affecting public safety and spending. Integrated treatment has been demonstrated as an evidence-based practice that, if properly implemented, yields positive outcomes for individuals with co-occurring disorders. Despite this, the availability of integrated services remains limited in most communities. In this presentation, Dr. Osher will introduce what constitutes integrated treatment and discuss how providers and programs can integrate mental health and substance abuse services for justice-involved people with co-occurring disorders across the criminal justice continuum.

Dr. Fred Osher, Director, Health Systems and Service Policy, Council of State Governments Justice Center
