On Dec. 4, 2018, I was released from the Federal Bureau of Prisons after spending 24 years, eight months and 15 days in prison for a crime I committed as an uneducated, unstructured, foolish, immature, and reckless 17-year-old. As we mark Second Chance Month, I present myself as someone who has not only benefited from a second chance, but who can serve as an example of how others can benefit from the services available to returning citizens—and offer some ideas about how we can better support those coming home.
