U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) is working to expand access to education for those with criminal records by releasing two new bills. “People with a criminal record should have the chance to learn or go back to school,” said Senator Schatz. “These bills target the barriers that make it harder for people to pursue a better life through higher education.” Both bills would apply to those who are in prison or applying to go back to school with a criminal record.
The Promoting Reentry through Education in Prisons (PREP) Act would create both an office within the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) to focus on federal correctional education and a new program focused on partnerships between local education providers and federal prisons.
