Equipping Individuals for Life Beyond Bars: The Promise of Higher Education & Job Training in Closing the Gap in Skills for Incarcerated Adults

New AmericaAs the overwhelming majority of those in U.S. prisons will rejoin society, it is imperative to prepare these individuals to transition by providing effective rehabilitative programs. This report from New America finds that although there is a gap between adults who are incarcerated and the general public in both literacy and numeracy skills, completion of a postsecondary credential or participation in job training while incarcerated ameliorates this gap. Furthermore, regardless of time left before release, all adults who are incarcerated show interest in, participate in, and complete these programs at similar rates.
