Optimizing the Effectiveness of Correctional Programming: The Importance of Dosage, Timing, and Sequencing

AEIWhen working with incarcerated people, the “how” and “when” of correctional programming is often as important as the “what.” A new report by the American Enterprise Institute outlines the current research on effective delivery of interventions, offering a framework for criminal justice officials and policymakers to consider when determining programming dosage.

Key findings include: as program participation increases, recidivism generally decreases, and recidivism outcomes are significantly better when prisoners participate in multiple interventions or spend much of their imprisonment in programming; back-loading programming closer to release from prison has been associated with better recidivism outcomes; and program sequencing may be effective for those who participate in multiple interventions.
