The Importance of the Company You Keep: The Effectiveness of Social Support Interventions for Prisoners

AEIThis report from the American Enterprise Institute examines the method of cutting incarcerated people off from the rest of society as a means of punishment, and explores how the practice is less effective at lowering the risk of recidivism than the use of social support interventions. The study describes how prison systems can expand access to prosocial support for people who are incarcerated without compromising safety and security within the correctional facilities; it also explains that the goal of expanded access should be a continuum of social support from prison to the community and how this improved service delivery can produce better recidivism outcomes.
