Issue Brief: Accessing Substance Use Disorder and Related Treatment Services Training for Law Enforcement

National Drug Resource Center logoLaw enforcement officers are uniquely positioned to offer key interventions to those with substance addictions. It is estimated that 1.5 million individuals arrested each year are at risk of substance addiction, and, as the opioid crisis continues, the frequency of rank-and-file officers acting as first responders and street counselors to active users has only risen. This issue brief from the National Drug Court Resource Center aims to assist law enforcement in managing this role and help them to capitalize on opportunities to divert people into proper treatment.
