Medications for Opioid Use Disorder Save Lives

National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and MedicineMedications for opioid addictions save lives. Yet most people with opioid addictions in the United States receive no treatment at all, and only a fraction of those receive medications for opioid addictions. With support from the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine released a report that presents the findings from an expert committee that examined the evidence base for medications to treat opioid addictions and identified barriers that prevent people from accessing safe, effective, medication-based treatment, including in criminal justice settings.
