There are a number of reasons a child may begin to get into trouble. Their parents could be in crisis, there could be mental health or substance abuse issues, or they could be witness to domestic violence. Just to name a few, experts said. The trouble can start off as a small act of defiance in the classroom, but if not addressed appropriately, it can escalate. Violence against a teacher or a fight with another student could put them on a path heading straight toward the criminal justice system. In Burlington County, law enforcement, local churches, social organizations, youth-based groups, municipal, county and state agencies and school districts have been working together to find ways to intervene early in a child’s life and help steer them clear of that path.
