West Virginia
Overview

The CSG Justice Center began working with West Virginia state leaders in June 2012 to develop data-driven, consensus-based policy options designed to reduce corrections spending and increase public safety. CSG Justice Center experts interviewed stakeholders across the criminal justice system and conducted a comprehensive analysis of West Virginia’s criminal justice data to identify challenges facing the state:
- Over the past five years, both the number of people whose community-based supervision was revoked and the average length of stay following revocation have increased substantially
- The percentage of individuals released from prison without any community-based supervision has also increased
- Few offenders in need of substance abuse treatment receive it in the community, which has resulted in more individuals failing to complete their terms of probation or parole
