For individuals with a criminal record, certain restrictions exist that affect their ability to obtain gainful employment, housing, public benefits, and access to other rights and benefits. This webinar discusses these “collateral consequences” and provides an overview of efforts across the U.S. to mitigate these consequences through criminal record clearance legislation. Presenters also introduce the Clean Slate Clearinghouse (CSC), a project funded by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration and the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance and developed by The Council of State Governments Justice Center. The CSC provides people with criminal records, legal service providers, and state policymakers with information on juvenile and adult criminal record clearance policies in all U.S. states and territories.

Panelists:

  • Jacqueline Freeman, Unit Chief for Reentry Employment Services, U.S. Department of Labor
  • Deanna Hoskins, Senior Policy Advisor, U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance
  • Chidi Umez, Project Manager, The Council of State Governments Justice Center
