Program Basics:
Santa Maria Hostel provides substance use treatment and supportive housing to women in Harris County, Texas, many of whom are admitted to Santa Maria Hostel after their release from prison or jail. With Second Chance Act grant funding, Santa Maria Hostel began employing recovery coaches in 2013 to provide additional, one-on-one support to women in its Paths to Recovery program to help them meet their reentry goals. Recovery coaches also help connect participants to housing, education, and employment services.
Impact:
Between 2013 and 2015, Santa Maria Hostel reported that 82 percent of Paths to Recovery program participants had no record of reoffending of any kind.
In Their Own Words:
“The Second Chance Act funding was so important for Paths to Recovery,” said Amelia Murphy, director of Recovery Support Services at Santa Maria Hostel. “Now we make coaching a part of everything we do at Santa Maria Hostel.”
