How Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics Support People in the Criminal Justice System

Jurisdictions across the country are grappling with developing comprehensive, cross-sector, community-based crisis response systems that address the needs of individuals involved in the criminal justice system who have mental health and/or substance use disorders and provide early intervention and deflection opportunities away from the justice system. Launched in 2017, Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBHCs) provide a coordinated, comprehensive, 24/7 behavioral health care model at the state and local level often involving key criminal justice partnerships.

This virtual discussion will (1) provide an overview of the CCBHC model, (2) highlight examples of CCBHCs partnering with criminal justice entities in their communities, (3) discuss ways to build collaborations between behavioral health and criminal justice entities, and (4) highlight ways to start and sustain a CCBHC program.
