DOJ Announces FY2015 Second Chance Act Awards to Support Reentry Initiatives for Adults and Youth

The U.S. Department of Justice recently announced that $53 million in grants will be awarded to 45 jurisdictions under the Second Chance Act (SCA) program in FY2015. Including this year’s cohort of grantees, more than 700 SCA grants have been awarded to agencies and organizations in 49 states.

Including this year’s cohort of grantees, more than 700 SCA grants have been awarded to agencies and organizations in 49 states.

Signed into law in 2008, SCA represents a federal, bipartisan commitment to improve outcomes for youth and adults returning to their communities from prisons, jails, and juvenile facilities. The SCA grant program has funded a wide range of improved supervision practices and reentry programs, including employment assistance and job-skills training, treatment for mental and substance use disorders, education, housing assistance, family services, and mentoring.

New SCA grant programs in FY2015 include Supporting Latino/a Youth from Out-of-Home Placement to the Community and Strengthening Families and Children of Incarcerated Parents. Within DOJ’s Office of Justice Programs, the Bureau of Justice Assistance administers grants for programs serving adults, while the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention oversees youth-serving programs.
