Program Highlights

  • Small city and rural community collaboration and coordination across multiple jurisdictions
  • Social workers have been embedded in the police department since 2016. Currently, the focus of the program is a co-response model.
  • Social workers are the liaisons between frontline police work and the community, which includes service providers and individuals/families that are in crisis.
  • Employs a Community Connection Team, which consists of case managers and therapists partnered with Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) detectives and a sergeant. Currently, the team is comprised of 1 director, 3 social work managers, 1 police sergeant, 6 Masters level clinicians, 9 case managers, 4 CIT detectives, and 1 office facilitator.  The team functions as a co-responder unit with a social worker responding to 911 calls alongside a CIT detective or patrol officer. The co-responder team addresses “social issue calls,” which may look like: an unwanted person; a person with suicidal ideas; and concerns related to mental health, homelessness, and substance use disorders. The team also works with CIT Metro to conduct CIT trainings for multiple police departments in Salt Lake Valley.
  • The CIT multi-county collaboration:
    • Provides 5 40-hour CIT Academies for patrol and corrections
    • Operates a dedicated CIT Investigative Unit with a detective to follow up on mental health calls for service
  • Police Officer Standards and Training:
    • 2hour Autism class
    • Yearly mental health/de-escalation training for the police department
    • 16 hours of training for Police Academy trainees
