Program Highlights
- Oversees the county jail, which includes:
- a mental health infirmary
- mental health step-down units
- 24/7 psychiatric overage
- a chronic care mental health clinic
- a peer reentry program
- Competency and Sanity Evaluation Unit
- Jail-Based Competency Restoration Unit
- Community Assistance Resource Program
- a crisis intervention response team
- Operates a mobile crisis team, a co-responder unit, and a homeless outreach team
- Has a robust data collection process that includes a mental health dashboard
- Provides Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) to law enforcement officers, dispatch workers, correctional officers, and mental health workers. Harris County has a dedicated behavioral health training team who administers ICAT for jail staff.
- Runs the Clinician and Officer Remote Evaluation (CORE) program, which allows officers to connect with Master’s level-trained clinicians to conduct evaluations remotely, allowing these clinicians to serve many more people than if they were riding in the car with law enforcement. Link to the guide
